The Sierra Morena or dark sierra is an area of relatively unpopulated rolling hills that run across northern Andalucia to the north of Córdoba city. It creates a natural barrier between Extremadura to the north and Andalucía.
Very few tourists venture into these wild and remote pine, oak and cork clad hills which has an atmosphere and landscape more typical of Extremadura or Castilla La Mancha.
It is an exceptionally beautiful part of Spain and if you seek an unspoilt and undiscovered part of Spain then it could be for you.
Property prices in this region are, as at the time of writing (2008) relatively inexpensive in comparison with the rest of Andalucía but this will all change when Córdoba airport opens to international traffic in 2010.
There plenty of things to do if you seek the outdoor life including the only 2 golf courses in the province, namely Córdoba CG and Pozoblanco (a 9 hole course).
You will find many lakes or reservoirs in this area which provide the opportunity to fish or sail.
If you want to explore the distant hills head for the area’s coal mining villages. Although not as pretty as the whitewashed villages of the south, they still have their own brooding appeal.
You will also find huge fincas which provide excellent hunting opportunities if you fancy your chances of shooting one of area’s wild boars amongst the many species of game.
