Córdoba City (Andalucía, Spain)

Córdoba, the very name conjures up visions of the best of Andalucía.

The present-day city which has a population of 325,000 is the provincial capital and is a pleasant mix of modern and much older architecture.

It sits astride the river Guadalquivir, one of Spain’s largest and the most important in Andalucía.

The city was founded in Roman times by Claudius Marcellus.

In the tenth century, Córdoba was regarded as the largest and most important city in Europe and possibly the world with a population of 500,000. At that time it was the cultural, political and economic centre of the Muslim Caliphate that ruled nearly all the Iberian Peninsula. It was a seat of learning equal to Oxford and Cambridge combined today.

Geographically it lies in a depression below the beautiful Sierra Morena and enjoys a very agreeable climate. The summer months, especially July and August can be extremely hot with temperatures often in the high fifties, centigrade. At this time of year most of the locals head for the Costa del Sol to cool off.

The city contains many important buildings.

In addition there are hundreds of Córdoban patios and gardens where you can take respite from the heat.

One of the best times of the year to visit Córdoba is in the spring when the city hosts the Festival of the Patios competition, May crosses and the annual fair. At this time the whole city smells of orange blossom.

Córdoba is an excellent choice for a stay as it has excellent lines of communication with the rest of Spain being at the hub of the AVE (High Speed Train) network, Motorway network and will have an International Airport in 2010.

Just a few kilometres from the centre and you are in the Pine clad Sierra Nevada with the only 18 hole golf course in the province. There are many lakes and reservoirs where you can enjoy a pleasant day away from the heat and bustle of the city.

The city is also rightly famous for its incredible choice of good eating places, many of which have their own private patios.

For entertainment you can take in a show at one of the several theatres, visit the cinema, experience a Flamenco evening or just stroll through one of the many parks where there is always something going on.
